ipods and daps

i know you saw the post title and thought, ‘wtf is a dap?’

dap stands for ‘digital audio player’ and is the tech industry’s shorthand version of mp3 players. this term is also used interchangeably with pvp (personal video player).

first off, i’m going to start with the fact that ipod sucks. yes, i said it (waiting for the shock to set in).

anyone who has owned the first 4 generations of ipod knows that those things, whether nano, shuffle, or standard, ‘brick’ up before the 6 months is out. trouble is, apple doesn’t really care because they know you spend an arm and a leg on the thing because it looks cool and now they’ve said you can help the world by buying one.

so what’s better? literally everything. i remember when my friend first asked me what kind of dap he should buy and i told him a cowon x5. this was before the video ipod. the device even played video at the time (a couple years ago) and he loved it.

if you go on cnet’s site and follow engadget, you’ll see that a lot of people in the tech world either sarcastically support or loathe apple and sony small devices, unless they’re fanboys.

side note: now, if you follow that cnet link, you’ll see that apple did grab the number 2 spot. and while i don’t personally own the 5th generation ipod, i know quite a few who have. while it may be shiny out of the box, its long-term quality i’m pushing here.

back to sony and apple: they make overpriced products that look better than they are reliable. while i agree that ybp’s have to keep up with the hottest trends, lets not throw our money down the drain.

so i submit, if you’re looking into a new dap this christmas, look at toshiba’s gigabeat, cowon’s x5L, or a creative zen vision M. you’ll be happy you did.
