New BMW set to hit U.S. shores

BMW 1-seriesAlthough already a commodity here in Europe, the BMW 1-series will be making its U.S. debut in 2008 aimed squarely at the award-winning VW GTI. Priced between the MINI and current generation 3-series, the 1-series is planned to have two versions, the 135i and 130. Options will include either a turbo-charged 4-cylinder or twin-turbo inline 6-cylinder.

Specifically significant to the current and newer classes of Young Black Professionals is the pricing of this new beemer. While undoubtedly having a name-brand, German vehicle as your first (or second) purchase to identify a sense of “I’ve made it”, the 1-series may fulfill that segment. Undoubtedly, many will criticize the hatchback look, but practicality looks to meet sophistication and performance in this upcoming 2-door. While large enough to seat a few friends for a nice evening out, it still is able to hold a few groceries on the way back to the loft. Definitely something to look out for.

  2. That’s odd. BMW is making adjustments to keep up with VW? Does that seem backwards to anyone else???

  3. There is a little bit of back and forth about whether luxury car companies should ‘water down’ the market with entry-level and mid-level cars. I’m not sure how I feel about it, but I’m definitely a fan of the trickle down effect of some of the technology that gets put into the 7-series and 6-series. I think the main downside is that the brand will not hold its value as well, especially if the entry-level segments aren’t put together well. Think Cadillac in its first version of the CTS, Mercedes with the C-Class, and Land Rover with the Freelander.
