tech news 2/21: “the next 10 days are big” edition

this will be the last ‘tech news’ post on blogger. that’s right!

we’re moving!!

we’ve been hard at work getting the new ybpguide.com site up and running. the next 10 days will be huge. i figured i’d give you a sneak peek of what’s down the road in the image to the left.

continuing to the news…

in another tech news post, i mentioned the FUBAR state of big companies and their push for digital rights management, or DRM. engadget has thorough synopsis painting quite a clear picture of where we are regarding this debate. i think its an important discussion for all consumers, whether technically inclined or not, because it thrusts into the spotlight a philosophy the FOSS community has had for awhile:

distancing people from the medium that is supposed to make their lives more enjoyable and productive through corporate mechanisms of patent protection and greed only foster a sense of isolation to those who cannot afford the premium price tag especially when the product is (for lack of a better word) crappy.

arstechnica.com is reporting that media giant viacom has decided to partner with up-and-coming online media site joost to provide users with television shows, movies, and music videos. viacom owns bet, mtv, comedy central, and paramount movie studios. the founders of joost come from a respectable pedigree having founded skype, an internet telephone that just passed 500 million downloads, and kazaa, a popular p2p file-sharing application.

techcrunch is reporting that kevin rose, founder of a popular community-based url submission website, is planning to adopt the openid identity platform. while openid maybe a little over the head of the layman, think of it as a platform that requires only one login despite going to multiple websites for a more secure form of browsing. microsoft and aol have also announced their support.
