i wrote earlier last week about possible link of al sharpton’s ancestors to segregationist strom thurmond’s family and how ‘deep’ it was to come to that realization. if you read the comments in the post, you saw that a few of the readers pursued some of the same avenues with their own lineage through ancestry.com.
well, al sharpton recently appeared on the daily show with jon stewart to talk about the ordeal. while i’ve never been a staunch advocate of the reverand, i’ve never had anything against him either. this brief interview, however, with ‘harvard’ jon and his amazement of the reality of slavery to present day really opens a window to why reverand al does what he does. constantly fighting, always remembering, and never being silent. after all, these traits are what define the legacy that precedes us.
enjoy!

It must have been a profound moment for the Rev. Al to realize that his ancestor was owned by the ancestors of the segregationist, Strom Thurmond.

definitely. i’m not sure what my reaction would be in that situation.
