the 2.0 version of the web we are currently seeing has yielded an explosion of job boards on many popular websites. the idea is that a blog, in an attempt to increase its readership and retain its fan base, will add content that will help the user. this, in fact, is one of the main theories behind web 2.0.
as you’ve heard many times, the average young black professional will change jobs at least 5-10 times before they turn 35. it is in that transition that i offer another great resource.
simplyhired is a ‘vertical’ search engine that crawls the web looking for job postings and aggregates them to its site. what makes this particular site useful and more effective than monster is its simplicity. you visit the site and you are immediately greeted by a ‘google-esque’ search, requiring only the keywords and location.

you can also create an account that saves your searches as well as a simplified view of what jobs you’ve applied for. the usual is also available, including uploading your resume, any email alerts that popped up, and default account details.
the coolest feature, i think, is the ability to add FIVE keywords to yourself that make you stand out. think of it as a parallel to those interviews where they asked you, ‘what words would best describe who you are’.
simplyhired has also integrated its job results into linkedin and payscale. linkedin is a professional networking site that has grown in vast popularity with company executives. it differs from facebook and myspace because of its viable professional networking atmosphere that not only connects your old college buddies, but also connects to people in your corporate circle. i wrote about it briefly in an old ‘tech news’ post if you want to find out more. payscale is a website that lets you see the industry average compensation for certain defined job roles. very handy when you’re at the negotiating table for your offer.
once you’ve found a particular job you’d like, follow-up! if you can’t seem to find anything, there are always possibilities at professional conferences.

Frederic, I honestly think Simply Hired and Indeed are really tech heavy or aimed at directorate levels.
Do they really represent value for money for blue collar or middle management worker? How do they really fare compared to say Monster or Jobster?

you may be right in terms of the variety of jobs offered through the site. i think this is because the service is merely an aggregator of posted jobs throughout the interweb. if you’ve visited other popular websites, the types of jobs that are posted tend to be tech focused.
however, i have seen marketing and sales positions posted, so i would at least offer simplyhired as a healthy alternative.
obviously monster has the monopoly, so it may be wise to do both. just providing another option!

Fredric – great informative item. Another comprehensive alternative to see were you are in your job category is to check SalaryBase.com (where you actually compared vs. real salaries profiles)
