Becoming Fearless

“Our Deepest Fear …”

Whether you’re afraid of asking for a raise, disappointing your family, or flying, fear is a sign of self-deception. When you allow your attention to be absorbed in fear, you have forgotten what is actually going on. In actuality, only one thing can really threaten you, and that is doubt of your own power and lovability. When you trust and accept that you have these innate qualities, your fears- of personal inadequacies, of other people, of things you can’t control- will dissolve, unable to coexist with them.

Fearlessness requires attention and receptivity- it takes focus to stand still in the eye of a tornado and not be swept away by it. But once you’ve found a way to face your worries, you’ll find fear’s opposite: the ability to remain open and mindful under all circumstances.

Susan Piver, author of How Not to Be Afraid of Your Own Life.
