Can’t we all just sleep alone?

sleep1.jpg For a long time people mocked me for saying I was not sure I could sleep next to someone every night, no matter how in love I may be and now I know why. Austrian scientists at the University of Vienna published a study reported in BBC News article “Bed Sharing ‘drains men’s brains’” which reveals that when men spend the night with a bed mate their sleep is disturbed, whether they make love or not. These disturbances impair their mental ability the next day and may also increase their stress hormone levels. Women in the study fared better because they sleep more deeply.

Some things are better done alone. Take movies for example. It’s hard not to be pulled out of the experience by the shifting, popcorn-crunching, question-asking person next to you. Any of these distractions pull you out of the experience, not unlike sleep. (Note: I’m also single, and maybe some of these hang-ups are why, no?)

The idea is not to encourage people to break long-time sleeping habits. The study showed that if two people have shared their bed with their partner for a long time they miss them and that will disturb sleep. However, Dr. Neil Stanley, a sleep expert, said “sharing the bed space with someone who is making noises and who you have to fight for the duvet is not sensible.” So for those of you new to a relationship or sleeping arrangement, or who find you just need to get a night or two of uninterrupted sleep, don’t feel guilty or embarrassed if you want to sleep alone. Just tell your mate your Dr. (Stanley) said “sleep is the most selfish thing you can do and it’s vital for good physical and mental health.”
