i couldn’t sleep last night

Virginia Tech Peace Ribboni’m more than 4400 miles away from blacksburg, virginia at work in london, yet i couldn’t sleep last night. i don’t have any immediate family or friends that attend virginia tech, but i couldn’t really get a good night’s rest. even now as i type this, the magnitude of what happened yesterday fuels a splitting headache brought on by lack of sleep.

despite the senseless violence we read and write about in our respective parts of the world, the tragedy yesterday touched a nerve similar to that of september 11th. the image of human lives extinguished like a flame on a candle is a lasting impression i cannot seem to shake. my eyes well up with emotion as i think about the brothers and uncles and grandfathers who have learned their young beacons of light have been taken. maybe it’s also because i have a younger sister in college and another embarking on college this year. i just can’t imagine them, sitting in class, and being taken.

my daily routine is usually to scour chicagotribune.com, cnn.com, and msnbc.com, just to see what is going in the world. after watching bbc news 24 yesterday trying to get an understanding of what happened, its hard for me to go to those websites now. i guess the videogames and movies and law and order’s have not desensitized me to the reality of real violence.

i also read a report this morning that the first victim was possibly a black residential advisor. Ryan Clark of Virginia Tech Tragedy[update] his name was ryan clark. he was a senior and 4.0 student. info of others here. live video here.

i pray that God saves the souls of those that were lost and ease the minds of those who are grieving.

i pray this so that my mind can rest tonight.

please post the peace ribbon on your sites.

The tragedies of yesterday made me think that by growing up in the inner city of Connecticut where we ALWAYS had security and police officers at the entrances of each unlocked door (from elementary even up to college), I guess I take those things (posted security) for granted.

As I was going through my daily routine of posting on my favorite message boards I came across a post on one of them regarding a memorial page on MySpace. The page gives a link to Ryan's personal page. I saw that it showed yesterday as his last log in. For some reason this made it all the more profound. Imagine starting your day as normal yet not realizing that it would be the absolute last time you initiate your daily routine. To say I am deeply saddened by this would be an understatement. Here's the link to the Memorial page: http://www.myspace.com/vtmemorial_41607
