Quantcast Flip Flops, more harm than good? « Young Black Professional Guide

Young Black Professional Guide to flip flopsWell, I don’t know how the weather is in your neck of the woods, but it’s warming up in Chicago and I’m ready to break out my summer gear. But I just read an article about flip flops that makes me hesitate before making them my permanent summer shoes. Forbes.com puts it bluntly: “While spike-heeled stilettos and strappy sandals seem like the obvious culprits when it comes to foot pain, doctors say the worst shoes a person can wear are those flat thongs.”

Flip-flops aren’t “feet-friendly” because your toes must clench to the bottom of the shoe when walking to keep them on, according to Evansville Courier and Press newspaper. Muscles in the feet and legs must work harder, compared with the effort required by muscles when wearing tied shoes. Time out- do your toes clench when you walk in flip flops? I don’t know about you, but I actually did a test and watched my toes to see if this was true. For some shoes it is, for others it was fine. It depends on how tight the thong is between your toes and how tight the other straps are around your feet. But doctors still say that because there is not adequate support for feet, flip-flops can cause damaged muscles in the feet and legs. Is this info enough to get you to stop wearing Old Navy’s $3.50 flat flip-flops? I think I’ll still sport them this summer, but only in moderation. Have a good weekend! :-)

  • The other day I say an Asian guy wearing flip flops playing a pick-up game of basketball–a couple of brothers, couple of Latinos, a white guy–and he was the fastest and one of the best play out there. I say him do a cross-over.
