the absolute best instant messenger - pidgin

pidgin instant messengeryou have instant messenger (IM). maybe it’s from yahoo. maybe it’s from aol. heck, you may even be on msn (eww). either way, it can be a pain having to switch in and out, back and forth between programs to talk to your giant fanbase. well, no longer.

pidgin compatible applications Young Black Professional Guidepidgin (formerly called gaim) is an excellent application that runs on windows AND linux (for all those that have taken my advice and tried ubuntu). it allows you to chat across platforms. simply enter your account credentials and pidgin pulls all of your account information for you. check out all of the compatible platforms you can use!

the neatest thing about pidgin is the ton of options available. you can have all of your IM’s in one window with tabs (like firefox). you can choose to hide/unhide your offline buddies, certain groups, and whether to display someone’s idle time. you can also enable/disable various plugins (like firefox) to customize pidgin just the way you want!

pidgin also has a feature called ‘buddy pounce’ which is a little ’stalker’ app that allows you to prepare a message or action if a certain buddy signs on. think auto-notification on steroids. you can preset a message, sound, etc.
