Last week I wrote about Genarlow Wilson, a Georgia inmate convicted under a state law that punished receiving sexual favors from minors. Wilson, who was also a minor at the time, got 10 years in prison without the possibility of parole. Today his sentence was downgraded to a misdemeanor and the judge has ruled that the 21-year old can go free on time served.

I applaud the fact that the judge finally came to his sense and agreed to allow Genarlow Wilson to be freed. The law resulted in two of the most ridiculous sentences I have read about in recent years. However, there are those that do not want to bring this saga to an end. Apparently, Georgia’s attorney general has filed an appeal of the judge’s decision, so Genarlow Wilson is not free. Good for him. Hopefully he’ll be able to make something of him self now giving this second opportunity.
