Justice for all?

Young Black Professional Guide Justice For All?R. Kelly is going to court … finally – unless “something happens” (which is what I think will happen, by the way). Kelly, his lawyer, the lead prosecutor and the judge met Wednesday. I’m assuming that most of you who care to comment have probably already voiced your views a million times, so let’s take a different approach.

Perhaps you read the article featuring Kelly’s wife in the June 2007 Essence where she defended his innocence and lashed out at the media. Or maybe most of what you’ve read about this saga is from the blogosphere.

So how do you think the media will cover this? How will the black press, the mainstream media and blogs approach this differently … or similarly? I’m wondering what Fox News and Court TV will say. And honestly, even Jet … a little bit.

Young Black Professional Guide Justice For All?As expected, Melanie “Scary Spice” Brown recently filed for child support for her child with Eddie Murphy. Some of you may know that Eddie already has five kids and recently became engaged to Tracey Edmonds, ex-wife of Kenneth “Babyface” Edmonds. Tracey has two kids of her own.

Murphy will possibly have 8 mouths to feed – not including his own. Some may say he has the money, but does that mean he should pay that much (side note: how should these things be handled when it was only the woman’s decision to make the baby … definitely another discussion)?

I have no idea how these decisions are made. But I do know that Sean “Diddy” Combs pays nearly $22,000 a month for his oldest son and $35,000 a month for his youngest son. Because he and his long-time girlfriend, Kim Porter, announced their split last month, I can only assume that he will soon be paying a comparable amount for his 7-month-old twin girls.

So to rap all of this up, we have one situation where some people say it’s clear that celebrities are treated far better than us YBPs – surely none of us would have been able to dodge court the way Kelly has. Yet we’ve got another that some folks have used to say the system works unfairly against unwed celebrity fathers – Brown didn’t ask for child support from the father of her oldest daughter; and what kids NEEDS 20-something thousand dollars a month anyway!?

What are your thoughts?

  1. I dunno… they might keep this date for the trial. Isn’t the girl legal now? I think that was the intention of all this pushing back because now that she’s grown, the subconscious perception is that she is/was a grown woman.

And did you say his wife said he was falsely accused??? Did she see the same tape I sa… heard about?

  2. Good point, B. It will be harder for the judges to see her as a child if she’s grown.

Here’s the interview of Kelly’s wife:

  3. Poor Eddie Murphy….Scary Spice bothers me…plus I saw that she has a new boyfriend now and is very happy with her situation. I’m sure the extra income will make her even happier. I’m all about paying to support your kids, but not if it breaks the man. So get ready for more corny Eddie Murphy movies- because if he really will have 10 total mouths to feed, then he will take any work thrown at him…
