The U.S. of Faith
The Evangelical Right has not ruined the American people’s desire for a “godly” leader, reported the Washington Post.
Despite all the damage done in the (false) name of religion during the past two presidential terms, Americans still want their leader to believe in God. In fact, those surveyed said they are still more likely to vote for an Evangelical Christian than someone who is not, which is contrary to beliefs that voters may be backing away from candidates who wear their faith on their lapels.
“Sixty-one percent of those questioned said they would be less likely to support a presidential candidate who did not believe in God …. Only 5 percent or fewer said they would be likelier to support candidates who were atheists, Muslims or Mormons, according to the poll by two nonpartisan research groups, the Pew Research Center and the Pew Forum on Religion and Public Life.”
The study also features other data about how voters feel about black, female and Hispanic candidates.
