8 Tips for Public Speaking

I’ve always been fascinated by the statements that the fear of public speaking supersedes many terrifying possibilities in one’s life…more than being burned alive…more than being eaten by a shark. Well, fellow young black professionals, I offer some personal tips (and professional tips) that work. What qualifies me to provide any tips? Well, I don’t have a certificate, but I have won awards in a few speaking engagements, participated in a few national conferences in oratory, and just like to share things with you. :-)

First the personal.

Tips for Public Speaking1.) Love the glory of speaking your ideas succinctly and clearly. If you focus on the light at the end of the tunnel, it makes the journey less fearful. Concentrate on doing well, envision yourself speaking clearly, and think about the rousing applause that is to come.

2.) Fake it until you make it. The public eye is more about perception than it is truth. It sucks, but it is true. Even if you are extremely nervous, smile, walk confidently, and look into the eyes of your audience.

3.) Speak slower than you normally would. I cannot stress this enough. Even if it feels like you are pausing a lot, speak slow-ly.

4.) Face your fear. Admit that you have a problem, seek to understand it, and have faith that you will eventually conquer it.

5.) Know your material cold. When you do get an opportunity to present, it’s important to put your best foot forward.

6.) Take the pressure off yourself. Most people spend the vast majority of their waking cycles thinking about themselves.

7.) Interact with the audience. This takes us back to isolation, the feeling that you’re standing up there all alone; all eyes are on you; all the pressure is on you.

8.) Ask what’s the worst that can happen? That simple question can diffuse so many life problems it isn’t funny, and it certainly applies here.

These professional tips are expounded via the cnet link above, so check those out to get the full article. Also check out a previous article regarding a popular club that can help with public speaking, toastmasters.

What about our readers? Do you have any tips for public speaking? I know Mr. McQueen is an walking encyclopedia on this topic.
