Thanksgiving

I love Thanksgiving. It’s one of my favorite Holidays. When I was younger it was all about the RIDICULOUS amounts of food present. Turkey, ham, dressing, pies, cakes, and red Kool-Aid. It was one of the few days in the year when you could sit on grandma’s couch, with the fine plastic covering and eat dinner in the living room. You and your cousin’s watching football games and sucking down cobbler till that ‘itis came and got you. After catching a nap you go into the kitchen to start round 2 of the food binge and find your family heavily engaged in a game of domino’s or Bid Whist. Mom’s and Dad’s, Aunts and Uncle’s going hard for the victory, crazy trash talk filling the room and wait…is that a Crown Royal bag?

Now that I’m a little older, I see Thanksgiving in a new light. Don’t get me wrong, I will still crush a styrofoam plate of food tomorrow but I love Thanksgiving these days because for at least one day I don’t have to read or hear as much about: The war in Iraq, the stock market, high a$$ gas prices or whatever “news” story the media throws out there. I can stay wrapped in my cocoon of family, food and football and let my mind go at ease. I can watch my nieces and nephews play, catch-up with my cousins and see my grandmother sit back and smile. I can sneak a sip of Crown from my uncle and maybe, just maybe get invited to play in the game of ‘spots.

Have a Safe and Happy Thanksgiving
