The Good News is …

If you know any black male High School seniors who want to teach, they may be able to go to College for free. This is an effort of the “Call Me MISTER” program. “The mission of the Call Me MISTER (acronym for Mentors Instructing Students Toward Effective Role Models) National Initiative is to increase the pool of available teachers from a broader more diverse background particularly among the State’s lowest performing elementary schools” (from their website).

There are 10 different South Carolina College or Universities participating including: Clemson, Benedict, Claflin, Morris, South Carolina State, Greenville Technical, Midlands Technical, Orangeburg-Calhoun Technical, Tri-County Technical, and Trident Technical.

Similarly, there are numerous programs for those of us who may be considering career changes or just a rewarding experience. Teach for America has a long-standing, (sometimes) subsidized program that focuses on under-served areas. And, I know here in South Florida Miami Teaching Fellows offers a program and training for placing teachers in high-risk, low-income areas. A quick Google search yielded similar programs in North Carolina, DC, Chicago, and Indianapolis.

These are wonderful opportunities. Check them out for yourself, or for someone you know!
