Healthy Eating

As we enter 2008, many of us are looking for ways to live healthier lifestyles. Along with exercise, a healthy diet is the key to controlling and maintaining our health.

But what do you do when you crave foods like pasta, bread and rice? How do you fit these items into your healthy diet? Try eating whole grain pastas, breads and rice!

whole grainsBefore we discuss the benefits of eating products made with whole grains, let’s discuss the difference between whole and refined grains. Whole grains contain the whole grain kernel - the bran, germ and endosperm. Refined grains have been milled, a process that removes the bran and germ. This is done to give grains a finer texture and longer shelf life, but it also removes the dietary fiber, iron and other beneficial vitamins.

Eating a diet rich with whole grains has many health benefits. Whole grains help provide many nutrients that are vital for the health and maintenance of our bodies. As part of a healthy diet, whole grains help reduce the risk of heart disease, help with weight management and a help reduce blood cholesterol levels.

Some examples of whole grains are whole-wheat flour, whole cornmeal, brown rice and even popcorn! Also included in the whole grains family is whole wheat pasta, oatmeal and wild rice. For breakfast, serve your family whole grain cereals, waffles and pancakes.

So, when you are craving a healthy snack or making a meal for your family, try preparing products made with whole wheat.
