Firefox Download Day: June 17, 2008
We, at the guide, like to support all things good for the interweb. Open-source software, like Ubuntu, a unique and easy-to-use Linux distribution, is a fine example of what a community can create. Professionally, I use Drupal as a tool for web development and this blog is powered by Wordpress, another open-source gem.
Keeping along that theme, the Firefox browser has garnered nearly 25% of the market over the last few years and tomorrow, June 17, 2008, they will be officially releasing their new client, Firefox 3.
If you’re new to Firefox, let me say, you don’t know what you have been missing. As a casual peruser of the internet, Firefox is simply a safer alternative to Internet Explorer. It has built-in spam-blockers and the new version will also sport anti-phishing technology. In addition to performance enhancements, Firefox also has tabbed browsing, allowing you to navigate multiple sites in one window.
For the aspiring web professional, Firefox is enhanced by its community with installable features called plugins. Some of these plugins range from browsing the web faster (FasterFox), to checking your Gmail (Gmail Manager), to advanced CSS and xHTML manipulation (Firebug). The Lifehacker blog is always featuring new and cool plugins and even shows the newest user how to utilize tools like Greasmonkey.
To kick off its new version 3, Firefox is attempting to break a world record with the most downloaded software in a day. Dubbed ‘Firefox Download Day’, more than a million people have pledged to download the newest version tomorrow to support the cause….including yours truly!
So join us, download Firefox 3 tomorrow, and have a happy interweb experience.
Update: We got ours. Did you get yours?
