Hancock Haters?

Wait, wait…wait, just a second.

When I first saw the previews for Hancock (like two months ago), I got really, really hype. I had no idea what the movie was about, but I saw Will Smith doing something completely awesome and had to go see it. I am NOT afraid to say I support this brotha whole-heartedly and love everything he does (including Wild Wild West). Am I fanboy? Perhaps.

Will Smith and wife Jada Pinkett-Smith

So the movie launch date got closer and closer and the point of the movie was slowly revealed. Much to the chagrin of my wife, I still was hype. After all, it was Will Smith…on the 4th…doing awesome things. Dude is Mr. 4th of July and I had to support him. And, like most people, I started perusing the reviews of the movie and….wow. They tore it apart. ‘An utter failure’ to ‘Will Smith and his charm cannot save this disaster of a film’ to ‘Seriously…wtf!?’

Ok, so maybe that last part was a little exaggerating, but still. Rottentomatoes.com pretty much summed up how the critics’ were reacting to the film. They gave it a resounding thumbs down.

Of course, being that he is Will Smith, dude still pulled in a total of $66 million this weekend. Further more, I conferred with my sister-in-law and father-in-law and they said the movie was great! While I don’t know their premise of going to see the movie (perhaps they were bored) or whether the negative reviews lowered their expectations, this whole scenario of downplaying ‘the new Big Willie flick’ sounds familiar.

They hated I, Robot. I loved it.
They hated I Am Legend. I loved it.
They even hated on him with the Academy Award for The Pursuit of Happyness. You KNOW he should have won something in that one. Forrest Whitaker was amazing, but the scene when him and his little boy had to sleep in the subway bathroom was too heart-wrenching.
They’re even hating on his school and trying to tie it to crazy Scientology.

I haven’t seen Hancock yet, but I’m guessing I’m going to love it. Have you guys seen it? Are they really hating on Will Smith because he is a great role model, has a great family, married to a beautiful Black woman, and can’t find any dirt on him?

Things that make you go….hmmmm.

  1. Sorry, but the movie was bad, and I’m a Will Smith fan! I loved I, Robot (got it on DVD) and I am Legend but this one….horrible! Will smith’s movies usually come out on my birthday (July 2nd) so I think it’s destiny or something but this year, it just didn’t work out so well!

The movie actually started out funny and with some action, but it slowly went downhill. I guess even during the middle, it was still funny but then you could tell that whoever wrote this screenplay didn’t really know how to end it. They had to pull some stuff out at the end to MAKE an ending and they failed miserably! I was hoping for it to end quickly and it just kept going and going and going….and we all knew what was going to happen (after a twist of course). I was very disappiointed.

I must also point out though that since the other action movies (except for Indiana Jones) have been absolutely great, the expectations may have been higher than usual and it had huge shoes to fill considering Will Smith was in it.

  2. Whatever…Fredric, you’ll love it. Go see it. Good summer flick. Big Willy is looking at his Charles Schwab account now and thinking about ways to spend the interest on his bonus check from this weekend. He told me he’s thinking of buying his mama a Phantom, Jada a Ferarri Enzo, and Tre a SLR McLaren…all critics get revived AMC Gremlins.

  3. Man, I know what you mean! Will Smith always seems to shine in my book. Anyway, Hancock was definitely worth the night out. It’s a fun film and we’ll just leave it at that.

  4. I really enjoyed the film and I am a bit surprised that many ‘critics’ didnt like it…I guess it is their job to be critical. In any case, I thought it was a good quality, fun movie. I was completely shocked by the ‘twist’ and think it was well done. I loved it!

  6. So I went and saw Hancock. Great movie.

It’s times like these that really make me upset because I feel like the only reason why the media said what they said was pure, unadulterated racism and hate.

Will Smith - Good job dude. I know it’s hard for people to see you in that light, but that is what acting is.

Mike Epps - You only got two lines, but they were damn funny.

  7. They hated I, Robot. I loved it.
