Hunger is prevalent in the U.S. Here are a few stats from America’s Second Harvest, a national food bank.

In 2005, 35.1 million Americans lived in food insecure (low food security and very low food security) households.

In 2005, households with children reported food insecurity at almost double the rate for those without children, 15.6% compared to 8.5%.

In 2005, households that are more likely to experience food insecurity are female-headed households with children, households with incomes below the poverty line, and households that reside in principal cities within metropolitan areas or within non-metropolitan (rural) areas.

Spread the Sharing by Country CrockCountry Crock has teamed up with America’s Second Harvest to help fight hunger in the U.S. and you can be a part of it. It’s really simple. Log onto Spreadthesharing.com and write about a time when you shared something – anything – with someone. For every story shared, Country Crock will donate a meal to America’s Second Harvest. The goal is to share one million meals by Thanksgiving of ‘07. As of today, 114, 344 meals have been donated. Let’s make it one million.

Dr. Ian Smith (known for his role on Celebrity Fit Club) has challenged our community to lose some weight. 50 Million pounds to be exact.

”The number one health crisis facing not only African Americans,50 million lb challenge
but all Americans, is being overweight. Two out of every
three adults (66%) today are considered to be overweight,
or even worse, obese. Even more troubling, 17% of all
children in the U.S. are now overweight. The statistics for
African Americans are even more alarming—where almost
80% of adult women and 67% of adult men are overweight.”

Teaming up with State Farm, Dr. Smith has challenged African Americans to unite against a growing health crisis – obesity. And unlike many health crisis that we face, obesity can often be defeated through better eating habits, consistent exercise, and healthy lifestyle choices.

The goal: Lose 50 Million Pounds. We can do it.  “Give up the pounds, not the fight.”

Whether you’re decorating your first apartment or furnishing your new home, selecting the right print to hang on your wall can be exciting. However, given the limited selection of African-American art offered by your local art gallery, your excitement can soon turn to discouragement. But never fear, YBP, the internet can be the ultimate art gallery!

I recently came across a website that offers a diverse selection of African-American prints and art. Artisan Arts Online offers prints, calendars, greeting cards, etc. from African-American artists. Although the website is not the most appealing, it does allow you to search by the artist’s name or by a very simplistic keyword search. You can either place your order online or call toll free to speak with a representative. I called the toll free number and spoke with a representative to place my order. The customer service was excellent and I received my print in less than five business days.

Now, if you’re interested in purchasing prints from a particular artist, you may be able to order directly from the artist’s website. For instance, Kevin A. Williams, known for paintings that are signed WAK, offers open edition and limited edition prints on his website. Also, Maurice Evans’ offerings range from originals for collectors to print reproductions for those of us just trying to add some color in our decor.

Now that you are armed with the seemingly unlimited resources of the net, find that perfect print and make your place YOURS!

Young Black Professional Guide to Daylight Savings TimeFYI an act of Congress makes daylight-saving time (DST) start early this year. The Energy Policy Act of 2005 extends DST by four weeks – three in the spring and one in the fall. This year, instead of DST beginning at 2:00am on the first Sunday in April, it starts this weekend on March 11th. So be sure and set your clocks forward so you’ll get the benefits of added daylight! Enjoy your weekends!

Okay YBPs, now that you’ve landed your dream job (or the job that’s on the path to your dream job), you have a little more time for yourself. Don’t just use it to catch up on the latest tv shows, conquer your new Wii game, or make extra deposits into your sleep bank (which, by the way, you can NEVER catch up on). Use your extra time for some personal self-development. Remember that book you’ve been dying to read? Now you can. Or that course you’ve wanted to take? It’s time. If you’re anything like me, education was a necessary distraction that pushed LIFE out of the way. But, even if you’ve earned your Bachelor’s Degree, Master’s, or PhD (or any other degree in between), it’s never an excuse to stop learning. Now, for a lot of professions, you will have to take continuing ed courses to stay up on what’s changing in your field. But I’m not talking about continuing ed courses for your profession, I am talking about continuing ed courses for YOU! And thanks to the Internet, you can take that photography class, brush up on your French, or learn how to draft grant proposals – a very useful skill. Ed2go offers online courses on anything from preparing for the GRE to web page design to photography. With courses starting at about $55.00, Ed2go gives you the opportunity to continue learning – in the comfort of your own home. So get out there and keep learning! Knowledge is power.
