Today is the 12th anniversary of the Million Man March, a “day of atonement” for black men across the nation that took place on the Washington Mall. Since then, Oct. 16 has been known as the Holy Day of Atonement. Minister Louis Farrakhan will speak about it today at the Atlanta Civic Center. Read about [...]

In their new book, “Come on People: On the Path from Victims to Victors,” Bill Cosby and Alvin F. Poussaint, Professor of Psychiatry and Faculty Associate Dean for Student Affairs at Harvard Medical School, consider the ways black people can rise above a history of oppression, seeming hopelessness, fear and lack of education on the [...]

It’s not really surprising to me that a Detroit party promoter thought he could get away with having a party just for light-skinned women. Read about it here. Depending on your environment, such coontastic ideas are the norm; go unchallenged and are often encouraged.
But I wonder if he would have gotten the same negative backlash [...]
Bell Returns
So am I the only one who doesn’t have a problem with this?

Chances are, however, I lack the drive, vision, singular passion and discernment she displayed so fearlessly. I don’t mean this in a [...]
How do YOU self-identify?
The comments and conversations about how Egyptians self-identify reminded me of a conversation I had with a YBP some time back.
She asked me how I self-identify and in what order. After thinking about it, I told her that I view myself as a Christian first; person of faith second; black third; so on and [...]

Have historically black colleges and universities ever had a more newsworthy week?!
Learning from Virginia Tech
On Monday, Delaware State University police arrested a suspect believed to be responsible for shooting two fellow DSU students and shooting at a third individual last Friday. While there’s some ongoing controversy about why the suspect was allowed to remain [...]
