after all the crap i talked about apple, i bought a mac mini yesterday. no, i didn’t buy it because it’s white and shiny and cool. i bought it as a professional tool for my up-and-coming web design business. sometimes you need to be familiar with all platforms (windows, linux, and mac) because of the advantages of each. well, now i can complete that goal having bought the final platform.

and to the news…

if you’ve bought and iphone, thinking of buying an iphone, or just like hearing about the iphone, i’ll appease you once again. while my last tech news post highlighted a team that is selling the unlock for $100, engadget is reporting that another team is selling an unlock for the iphone for free! that’s right…get your iphone madness on your own sim card for zero dollars. 8GB iriver clixif you’re in the market for a new mp3 player or pmp device, check out the sexy 8GB iriver clix. you’ve got the 2.2-inch screen, FM tuner, 24-hour battery life, and voice recorder goodness. best of all…it’s not an ipod! don’t take it from me, however. trusted tech site cnet gave the new device an 8.7. for all the treo lovers out there, palm has released a new version in europe called the 500v that should be making its way to american shores soon. i know a lot of people swear by their treos (just like the crackberry crows), so i’m sure this new device is a cause for joy. larger buttons and a crisper 320×240 display await you along with windows mobile 6. shaq has decided to divorce his wife, shaunie o’neal, after 5 years of marriage. i’m sure she’ll be well taken care of considering the small tribe they have together. i, for one, am enjoying my new found life with the wife! we did a small interview over at the “love’s a peach” blog.

on to the news…

man, it has been really hard trying to keep up with all the rumors and news when you go on vacation for a week. besides the fact that engadget comes out with a new article every 5 minutes, a lot of retailers are gearing up for the holiday season and trying to create buzz for next year’s electronic expo. of the ones i’ve sifted through, the most important topics seem to revolve around the iphone…

…that has apparently been hacked. a company called iphonesimfree has ’secretly’ created a software hack that allows one to use their iphone with any gsm network that uses a sim card. no, sprint is not a gsm network. in theory, one could purchase the uber-expensive gadget, ditch the at&t two-year legal choke hold, and pop in a t-mobile sim card. the only downside is that the company isn’t releasing the software to individual consumers and only selling it in bulk to resellers. (via engadget)

updated: i found an iphone hack you can try via the steve-jobs.com website. it’s slightly techie, but reportedly works. have fun!

creative zen…or iphone-inspired gadgets. the ‘must-have’ look of a screen taking up all of the face real estate of today’s gadget is on its way. when the ipod launched, many tried to duplicate its look and functionality. some did it really well. of the companies that did (in terms of mp3 players) was creative. starting with a release in singapore, creative has done it again, releasing the new credit-card sized ZEN. it has a big 2.5-inch color screen, can playback video (almost all forms) and provide 25 hours of playback. i honestly can’t wait until this hits u.s. shores, but for the importers our there, you may want to just get your conversion rate on and spend the singapore bucks for a 16 gig. …and the shows you watch on it (or any pvp for that manner). just in case you missed it last week, nbc and apple also had a divorce. although nbc makes up almost half of apple’s online tv shows, they decided to go their separate ways after some squabbling about pricing and profits. nowadays, it seems to be always be about money, eh? i’ve never used itunes to download shows (i prefer bitorrent), but if you want to get advanced previews of future nbc shows, plan to purchase seasons online, or episodes online, you’ll want to direct your attention away from itunes and sign-up for amazon’s online service, amazon unbox…that is, until nbc slaps them in the face with their own impending online video service. ipod touch

updated: almost as soon as pressed ’submit’, mr. jobs and apple went ahead and had their press conference releasing the new ipods. i’m not going to get into too much detail only because i’m a hater and think apple makes craptastic technology, but the new ‘ipod touch’ (read: iphone w/o the phone) sure is sexy! good luck trying to fit your 30 gigs of music, however. the top model only comes in with 16 gigs. first off, apologies for slacking on the ‘tech news’ and ‘weekly round-up’ posts these past days. the almost wife and i have been in transition from london back to the good ol’ chi and i’ve just been exhausted. rest assure that i’ll get back on the ball this week. :-)

ok, back to the topic at hand.
Ask Engadget
sometimes googling something doesn’t always yield the best recommendations when looking for answers to your technical questions:

  • what is your favorite digital audio player (dap)?
  • how do i shop for an hdtv?
  • what is the best audio recorder?

i suggest asking engadget. if you’ve read some of my other tech news posts, you’ll know that engadget is a tech enthusiast website that i often visit and share with our readers here at ybpguide. it is extremely popular in the blogging world and recorded a record number +20 million hits when it covered the unveiling of the iphone.

in addition to some of their other blogging side segments, engadget features an ‘ask engadget’ post every now and then that allows the readers to give their feedback to the question being asked. the more recent posts covering the three questions i just mentioned highlight some topics that have crossed my mind recently.

in addition to our hdtv guide and dap post, the engadget posts will shed light into the minds of millions of tech enthusiasts across the world ultimately benefiting you in your future purchases.

as always, you can always post your tech questions in the comments or by contacting us and i will respond within a few hours (if not sooner).

nothing worth noting has changed this past week in the tech sector. i figured i’d hit you guys up with some cool gadgets that i think will enhance your tv viewing and music listening experiences.

Young Black Professional Guide Plextor USB HDTV Receiverdid you know that your laptop can receive over-the-air digital broadcasts? plextor and avertv have released tv tuners that directly plug into your usb 2.0 port to allow you to receive digital HD broadcasts instantly. priced at $99 and $129, respectively, this will be perfect for virtual ybp’s who constantly travel and want to catch the upcoming nba finals in HD glory! with the included software, you could also pause and rewind live tv just like you would with your normal dvr at home. be sure to check out the minimum specs of your laptop to make sure you’re covered technically. via extremetech and ehomeupgrade.

Young Black Professional Guide Cowon Q5 Do Everything Gadget if you’ve ever asked me about digital audio players, you know that i’ve always recommended steering away from apple. although many have been sucked into the ‘its looks nice’ marketing strategy, i can assure you that there are better mp3 players out there. even better, there are devices that do video playback, music playback, wifi, bluetooth, and even HSDPA (think really fast wireless). such as the case with the new cowon q5. i recommended the x5 to my boy james and he loves it. between the reviews already pouring in and style of this device, i have no doubt you’ll be happy with this purchase. expected to come in around $499 for the 40Gb model and a hundred bucks more for a 60 gig. via laptopmag.

i couldn’t be more happier with the move to our new server. the guide is running a lot smoother and i have to give props to spry hosting for being so helpful. i even got my hands dirty with some command line linux!

woot!

just in case you missed that, woot is a cool ‘one day, one deal’ tech shopping site. the colorful banter by the editors for the special product is unfamiliarly refreshing. woot also boasts a nice rss feed for you to keep up with new products. best of all, its cheap! a nice easter egg is clicking the ‘woot’ header image. this takes you to another woot subdomain where they have woot deals on wine! we all know ybp’s love wine.

Young Black Professional Guide Iphonethe much rumored and overly hyped iphone has been confirmed to be released to the massive hoard on june 11th, coordinating with apple’s worldwide developers conference. while i have no doubt that the iphone will be the ‘it’ gadget this summer, the waiting list is beyond ridiculous with cingular and it threatens to undermine the sales of the ipod.Young Black Professional Guide PowerCast Forecast

wireless power is on the horizon. cnn is reporting that a startup company called powercast has inked deals with more than 100 companies to commercialize its wireless recharging technology. what this essentially means is that a user will soon be able to recharge their cell phone, dap, bluetooth peripheral (headset, mouse, etc), and even psp without a wire! while the concept of sending power wirelessly isn’t new, the company has been able to focus low levels of the premise in a very efficient manner thus making it commercially viable. i can’t wait!

editor’s note: i was asked recently why my posts are always in lowercase. :-) the simple answer is that it is a habit from being a coder. many computer languages do not honor capitalization when programming functions. as a result of being exposed to many lines of code, i default to lowercase.
