It’s been awhile since I’ve relegated our audience to my dribblings on about gadgets, video games, and computers, but that is only because I sift through the fodder and bring you the good stuff.

First up is the announcement that Facebook has chat.

Wait, what? You already knew that? O, ok.

FacebookWell, did you know that Facebook will soon be releasing Jabber functionality with Facebook chat? Yeah, I didn’t think so. What this means is that soon you will be able to take your favorite instant messenger client, like pidgin or adium or trillian, and chat directly with users on Facebook. Updating your status in your instant messenger client will also update your status in Facebook, which will be interesting to see as a lot of my friends use their current track in Winamp or Itunes as a status. The main reason, I believe, this interoperability step becomes important is because I’m finding that a lot of my friends and family use Facebook, more than they do AIM or Gmail. In one fail swoop, I’ll be able to immediately connect to my network from one client, whether they’re using Yahoo! chat, Gmail chat, AIM, interoffice Jabber, or Facebook chat.

The summer is upon us. That means new movies, new days, and new phones! While I’ve never been a hardcore phone officianado, I do appreciate efficiency, and any device that can make my life easier, I’m all about. The IPhone, at one point of time, did tickle my interest, but the rampant gouging of Apple with its pricetag and monopoly of service through AT&T was too much to bear. Phone-maker extraordinaire HTC, Inc., who made the first wirless Pocket PC and first Windows 5.0 smartphone, have officially unveiled their IPhone killer, albeit in the UK for now. What you see below is the HTC Diamond. It will sport a 2.8″ touch screen, TouchFlo 3D technology, a 3.2 megapixel camera, 4 gigs of storage, built-in broadband HSDPA connection speed, and integrated GPS. And…it’s black. Gotta love that. No word yet on which carriers will have first dibs to supply it here in the States, but if Sprint does pick it up and barring any egregious price tag, it looks like this will be my next phone.

sorry for the lack of post last week. these last few days have been hectic. i had to go ahead and quit the job to pursue my passion (more on that topic in another post), so the brain waves were slowly being fried as i completed a few projects i was working on. but, man…do i have a surprise for you!

ironman preview! woohoo! (shouts to dame and truthandopinion.net)

there has been a lot of underground buzz as the holidays approach, so i figured i’d try and cover as much of the relevant information as possible.

verizon voyagerverizon is launching their iphone killer, the voyager. it has two screens (one on the inside and outside of the phone), a 2 megapixel camera, and a micro SD slot for up to 8gb worth of storage. what do you think? will the iphone slowly die this thanksgiving? (pic via engadget)

sony has decided to play nice and debut a 40gb PS3 for under $400 (with blu-ray). will this finally be the answer to consumers actually picking up a ps3? i won’t lie. i’ve seen blu-ray in person on a gigantic sony t.v. and it is simply nothing short of amazing.

flying carwe’re almost there! a flying car is still in the works through the geniuses over at MIT, but the concept is pretty simple. they’ve managed to combine the aspect of driving to a short landing strip, wings folding out, and taking off to another small landing strip only to fold your wings up and go! aimed at business travelers and pilots, this may be the next step! (article and image via technology review)

microsoft is shipping a new quiter, cooler xbox 360’s just in time for all of their holiday bundles. the newer units are suppose to house a new 65nm chipset that is superior to the current 90nm chipset in all models. i think the barrage of complaints about the xbox 360’s reliability have finally caused gates and crew to get off their ass and provide a quality product. my 360 hasn’t broken yet, but i’m at least comforted by the fact that if it did, i could send it in for free for a shiny new one!

ybp on blackberryso you can’t put it down, eh?

the madness begins in 17 days. the commercials are blaring. geekie fanboys are salivating. walt mossberg of the wall street journal is gloating that he already has one. that $600 in your pocket is slowly burning a hole through your pants as it attempts to leap out, slap you, and force you to exchange it for a sleek, new iphone.

but wait…there have to be alternatives, right? can’t i have a neat interface, music, internet, and sexiness without forking over a car note?

yup. well, sort of. here are some iphone alternatives.

Young Black Professional Guide Keep Hope Alivetoday’s tech news post will be very short and sweet. i apologize to the readers who are used to my long, verbose analysis of the ‘goings-on’ in the tech space. :-) my family and i are currently exploring the back alleys of catalunya and i’m sneaking a post in.

as most regular readers probably know, the voice of shaquanda cotton’s ordeal has taken off. keep adding your voice to the comments, her message board, your local branches of government, and the texas governor.

shaquanda. keep hope alive.

first up is an article about a woman who is currently on trial for murdering her husband. the twist in this case is that her search queries in google, including ‘how to commit murder’, are being entered in as evidence. the precedence just goes to show that in this 2.0 world, every keystroke is tied to your daily life.

whether that particular legal case was a direct result of their forthcoming action, google has announced that it will begin to anonymize user’s search. while it may help ease the pains of the privacy advocates who believe google is starting to control all of the world’s information with their 2.5+ gb gmail accounts and cached pages, this step won’t save you from the data saved on your computer. ybp’s take note again. you are being watched, cataloged, stored, and cached.

although two stories about google usually suffice, i have to sneak one last in. Young Black Professional Guide Google Phonerumors have been circulating and it looks like google will officially throw its hat in the ring of the very lucrative ‘do-it-all’ phone market. in direct response to the iphone, a google exec has decided that a ‘google phone’ is needed in the market. can you see your fellow ybp’s walking through a lounge on the 4th with this thing attached to the hip? :-) if it means that we can get ahead by having another ‘do-it-all’ gadget other than the crackberry, i’m all for it.

last, but not least, mr. ‘got damn@ that is a hot beat’ a.k.a. timbaland has teamed up with rockstar games to produce a new project called beaterator. aimed at the untapped creative geniuses walking around in the corporate get-up, the game is a portable version of fruity loops and allows you to create your own soundtrack. it is currently available online and will be coming to the psp. some of you may know that i advocate the psp as nice gadget for the ybp, especially jetsetters. this plethora of sounds and rhythms should bring a nice atmosphere to an already cool gadget. who knows, the next jazzanova slash fusion slash house slash neo-soul hotness may come from tyrone in accounting.

dwyane wade edition sidekick IIIcan’t wait for the iphone? well, your practice of patience will get some more exercise with the unannounced, but leaked dwyane wade edition of the t-mobile’s uber-popular sidekick III. not only do you get the phone/sms/wap browser/camera ‘im cooler than you’ presence in miami heat white, but also get a the limited edition badging on the back.

come on….you know you want one.

interesting last post about cleanliness at the gym. i’ll add (in terms of helpful cleanliness tips) to try and sneeze into your arm, instead of your hands…for obvious reasons. can’t be a productive ybp without being healthy! but i digress…onto the news!

you don’t have to be in shape to play the wii, but there have been some complaints about being sore! even so, be careful when playing with family.

hopefully you saw my post awhile back about the allofmp3 hack. if not, you’re out of luck. not only has music for masses been updated, allofmp3.com was brought down by a joint task force between the U.S. and Russia.

if you have verizon, you’ll be getting some youtube goodies soon. but don’t fret Sprint customers, the Q is coming!

this maybe well known, but i found this site called imeem.com that works like a social music site. i’m sure you’re tired of another ‘find me on here’ to sign up to, but you’re actually able to listen to music and other people’s playlists right from the site without having to sign up. its better than myspace because you can search for music, videos, and bios on all artists. you might even find something new! i’ve been catching up on the old school Jon B hotness all week now. i’ll be sure to make a post soon about how to rip audio from the internet for free!

welcome to all the new fb readers catching this from the note widget!

part of being a ybp in the know is knowing the important stuff. since i’ma tech guy, i’ll bring you the important news surrounding technology from the various resources as a weekly installation.

first up, those of you celebrating your first few paychecks and buying an ipod need to know that the new ones may have a virus.

next, there’s an interesting article about the role of technologically savvy people and their influence on government. while we all can remember the day we decided we wanted to change the world, this is a nice synopsis of how the generational gap (and racial gap for that matter) is ever-present when it comes to those who make the rules and those that actually have to live by them. see, being a tech guy has its advantages!

on the ‘im about to buy a laptop soon’ front, apple is coming out with another iteration of the macbook and macbook pro. if you’ve read my other posts, you know how i feel about apple. but, at the same time, the macbook has gotten modest reviews (and here). a core 2 duo macbook will be sweet, but i’d wait to jump at it. be looking for the core duo macbooks to go down in price and to be sufficient.

if you have hd (or are looking into hd), start surfing over to engadgetHD. they have a daily listing of hd programs on tap so you don’t miss a beat of high definition goodness.

everytime i go out, it seems like you can’t exactly be a ybp on that hustle PROPERLY unless you’ve got a laptop and smartphone (read crackberry). even though most of these are probably corporate issues, if you decide to jump out there on your own, you’ll need to know the lingo so you pick the right one. here’s a nice article on smartphone lingo.
