One of the primary markers of consciousness is the awareness that no man is an island; we are not alone, such that most things we do will have an effect on someone else.

I vividly remember sitting in my apartment in college, high-speed internet included in the rent I shared with three other people. Napster blew up, and I owned every song I could imagine and more. Eventually the stories came out about the RIAA fighting back and by the time I got to law school, colleges, students and grandmothers were being sued for downloading music and movies without permission and without paying.

I researched this issue to discern whether I could justify downloading in this manner any longer. I understand now that Limewire and similar services are legal because there is a lawful purpose, i.e., peers actual do send others files and information over these networks that do not violate state and federal laws. I also learned that media could be copied (in some instances) for the purposes of training and education. And even that sharing among family members could be justified. But, when I was downloading Zapp & Roger, it wasn’t for my mom and dad, it wasn’t to learn their techniques, and it wasn’t something I was ’sharing’ with someone else who was entitled to share it with me.

I have debated this issue with friends and family. I understand all the rationales: music companies charge too much, the artists already make enough, I’m not hurting anyone. But, all you have to do is watch the TLC Behind The Music to know they aren’t making as much as we think. And sure, CEO’s and music execs make tons of money but they aren’t the only ones involved.

No one is talking about Sharon in human resources, James in marketing or Luisa the file clerk at one of these music companies. They have families, too. And, as CD sales plummet and illegal downloading continues in spite of the availability of legal, online pay sites, there is a human cost to our actions. This question boils down to what we want our actions to say about us.

It doesn’t have to be called wrong or right, illegal or legal to be conscious of what we want the things we do to say about us. Do we want to say, “I can download this legally because (1) I am blessed and able, (2) this puts money into circulation that eventually comes back to me, and (3) this honors the work of musicians, technicians and printers that for the most part aren’t thought of?” Or do we want to say, “I have to get mine and I am not concerned about the people whose livelihoods are affected by my choice. ”

If the music costs too much the appropriate response and the appropriate message is sent by not purchasing it. And I put myself in the shoes of one of those artists. What if my legal services were available for pay on a website, but somehow someone found a way to hack into it and give it away for free? Sure, I could be a wildly successful and wealthy attorney because of my site, but it still would not entitle someone to appropriate my work in that manner.

We make conscious choices with our dollar. When we spend (most times) we are choosing to validate, encourage and express our support for a product or service. We are making a qualitative statement. And, I like to think that when I buy a Kirk Franklin album or Common video I am saying affirmatively, “thank you for the way this has blessed my life.” Now, I know there’s not a lot of time in the day to think about purchases and iTunes like that. But, that is what walking aware is all about: recognizing the power and the choice we have in each moment to contribute to the good in ourselves and others.

pidgin instant messengeryou have instant messenger (IM). maybe it’s from yahoo. maybe it’s from aol. heck, you may even be on msn (eww). either way, it can be a pain having to switch in and out, back and forth between programs to talk to your giant fanbase. well, no longer.

pidgin compatible applications Young Black Professional Guidepidgin (formerly called gaim) is an excellent application that runs on windows AND linux (for all those that have taken my advice and tried ubuntu). it allows you to chat across platforms. simply enter your account credentials and pidgin pulls all of your account information for you. check out all of the compatible platforms you can use!

the neatest thing about pidgin is the ton of options available. you can have all of your IM’s in one window with tabs (like firefox). you can choose to hide/unhide your offline buddies, certain groups, and whether to display someone’s idle time. you can also enable/disable various plugins (like firefox) to customize pidgin just the way you want!

pidgin also has a feature called ‘buddy pounce’ which is a little ’stalker’ app that allows you to prepare a message or action if a certain buddy signs on. think auto-notification on steroids. you can preset a message, sound, etc.

get pidgin here.

Young Black Professional Guide StumbleUponi found the coolest web application a few weeks ago and i can say that it’s one of the best out there.

it’s called stumbeupon.

it acts as a little button in your web browser that allows you to find cool websites that you might not necessarily find on your own based on the interests you fill out in your profile. what makes the application the best is that you can rate each website you find with a ‘thumbs up’ or ‘thumbs down’ allowing more popular websites to to be stumbled.

Young Black Professional Guide StumbleUpon

as with most web apps, you create a profile with as much or as little information as you want.

i originally set my preferences for ‘hacking, electrical engineering, and african-americans’ and found all kinds of neat stuff. i stumbled across a site that details how to build a linux media center. i also found this article from a women who expounded about her experience regarding white privilege. interestingly, it was right on the heels of my post about affirmative action for whites. for those that are not sure, check out the ’suggested topics’.

when you stumbleupon something that someone else has rated, their username appears next to the ‘thumbs up’. you can add these users as your friends and stumble more things that they have stumbled (what a mouthful). be sure to add me!

stumbleupon only works as a firefox extension, so if you don’t have the browser (its free), go ahead and download it.

i missed last week regarding the tech news, so i hope you enjoy this edition.

buzzing across the news wire are reports that viacom giant is suing youtube for 1 billion dollars for copyright infringement of its mtv and comedy central videos. all-in-all, it amounts to about 160,000 videos. viacom attests that google-owned youtube did not satisfy their needs in negotiations. viacom also has allies in time warner, inc. and universal studios (big surprise: rolling eyes) in terms of how they view youtube. Young Black Professional Guide YouTubewhile i am by no means a lawyer, the main issue seems to be that viacom is upset that they were not able to get a hand in the giant pie of profit from users viewing their content. while youtube never actually sold the videos or pro-actively prevented the uploads, they did profit from the ad space sold on those pages. i think that viacom has a very slim case and will probably hinge their arguments on the ‘hard-work and sweat of those that make the show’. right. like i believe that. do you know any actors, musicians, or comedians that are actually given the rights to their content once they agree to distribute through viacom? yeah, that’s what i thought.

slashdot reported that dell has finally opened up a consumer survey regarding the overwhelming demand for linux to be distributed withYoung Black Professional Guide Kubuntu their computers. linux is an operating system, like windows and os x (for mac, often called ‘tiger’). it has been around for quite sometime and is very popular for technically-savvy users, especially database administrators. recently, there has been a big push for linux to become more user-friendly. versions like ubuntu and kubuntu (the screenshot to the right) have stepped up to the plate and are being reviewed across the tech-no-sphere as we speak.

why is this important? linux is free! free means that it can be opened up to all demographics without sacrificing experience. linux is also lightweight. this means that a user does not need the newest and most expensive computer to use it. all in all, this closes the digital divide. black people, especially ybp’s, need to know about linux and start churning the brain cells to make this a viable solution for our disparate, technology-challenged communities.

continuing on the ‘linux theme’, an editor over at hardocp tested linux for 30 days. it is a great read if you’re interested in trying it out. i’m still finishing the last pieces of the article, but what caught my eye the most was the ease of installing applications. simply check a box! in one sitting, he was able to install a dvd ripper, mp3 editor and player, bittorrent client, software to help connect his ipod, and video game emulator! be sure to also check out the beginner’s guide to running linux over at lifehacker.

if you can’t tell, i’m really excited about the new ybpguide.com redesign. i’ve been mulling over which blog editor to go with as well as the colors and layout i wanted. for all the readers that are using wordpress, we decided to go with the cutline 1.1 theme.

i also want to give a big HAPPY BIRTHDAY! to my sister lynsey who turned 18 yesterday. who’s proud? i’m proud. :-) Young Black Professional Guide google maps screenshot

on to the news…

one of my favorite applications, google maps, has rolled out a new feature highlighting the traffic conditions of major highways within the area you’re searching. even better, there is a google maps mobile application that can do the same thing!

adobe has announced that it will be offering its prized photoshop application online for free! personally, i think this is going to be huge. adobe is a monster in the applicationg community having contributed everything imageready, photoshop cs, and lifecycle generator. they also own flash and are THE standard in universal uneditable documents with their proprietary .pdf format. hopefully they’ll open up their api so that you can do a photoshop / amazon s3 / flickr mashup.

last, but not least, nickelodeon has released a youtube for kids hybrid called me:tv. although it’s well-known that the google vs. viacom showdown still lingers, the site aims to give kids a haven to publish creative content that could be aired on nickelodeon for all to enjoy. awww, nickelodeon. that brings me back (pete & pete, clarissa explains it all, and you can’t do that on television).
